National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters.
The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) awards the Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) credential to interpreters who pass a written examination and an oral performance examination in their target language. NBCMI is one of two nationally recognized credentialing bodies for healthcare interpreters in the US (the other being CHIA).
NBCMI certification is available in more languages than CHIA, including Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Tagalog — though specific language availability varies year to year based on examination administration.
Like CHIA certification, NBCMI certification exceeds the Section 1557 'qualified interpreter' standard and is preferred by hospital compliance officers, joint commission surveyors, and risk management teams.
