RID
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is the nationally recognized credentialing body for American Sign Language (ASL) and other signed-language interpreters in the United States. RID awards several certifications: the National Interpreter Certification (NIC), the Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) credential, and various legacy credentials.
Section 1557 of the ACA requires qualified sign-language interpreters for healthcare encounters with deaf and hard-of-hearing patients. While RID certification is not explicitly required, it is the recognized US professional standard and is universally preferred by healthcare compliance officers, IEP teams, courts, and government agencies.
ASL interpretation is provided in two modalities: video remote interpretation (VRI), which is appropriate for many routine encounters and typically available within 24 hours, and on-site interpretation, which is required for high-stakes encounters and typically requires 5 business days notice for non-emergency requests.
