TOEFL
Test of English as a Foreign Language.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an internationally recognized English proficiency examination administered by ETS. The most common version is the TOEFL iBT (internet-based test), which scores 0–120 across four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing (0–30 each).
Most US universities require TOEFL iBT scores of 80–100 for undergraduate admission and 90–110 for graduate admission. Specific requirements vary by institution and program. Scores are valid for 2 years.
TOEFL is competitive with IELTS for university admissions; many institutions accept both. For learners deciding which to take, TOEFL is more common in the United States and is administered by computer (closer to typed responses), while IELTS is more common internationally and offers paper-based options. Both are administered globally.
